final project: PSA

final project: PSA

essay

The message of this piece is anti-discrimination and bigotry against the LGBT+ community. This is important to me because as a member of the LGBT+ community, i have been targeted with hate by Academy students. I hope to educate those who are misinformed, and show that whether you are in the community or not, we all deserve respect. To get the message across, I showed how easy it is to show respect to your peers, and that it is free, unlike cafeteria food. Academy students all know the abomination that is cafeteria prices.

My choice of media is a poster with pull off tabs. It responds using the back of the tabs. On each tab, is a tip on how to respect LGBT+ people at school, or anywhere really. In a school setting, my poster(s) will be hung in the hallways. Students and teachers passing by may read it and take a tab.

I used many different tools in PhotoShop to convey my message. The background is a transgender pride flag with pink, white, and blue stripes. The main message in the text the piece is black font on a white stripe of the flag for contrast. It is in all capital letters and stands out as the main idea. The lunch items are arranged at the top the paper, and have their prices are below each one, shown as dollar bills and quarters. The information is organized so that each section of text fits units own separate stripe of the pride flag.

The focal point of this piece is the largest font on the page, reading “IT COSTS $0.00 TO RESPECT LGBT+ PEOPLE”. When reading this poster, the reader will likely see the phrase above first. Then, they would notice the lunch menu at the top and how expensive the food items are. Next they will read “Even if you can’t afford lunch, you can afford to be considerate to everyone, despite their sexuality or gender identity.” This then leads to the main informational portion of the piece, “what you can do to support LGBT+ people”. After reading that text, they will look to the bottom of the page, where the tabs hang. The tabs feature 6 $0 bills with their own trans pride flags for a background. It is balanced because it is broken into three main sections: the menu, the information, and the tabs. Also, the menu items are spread out equally, and the two tall drinks are in the center, making it more symmetrical. The piece as a whole is mostly positive space, making the small amount of white, or negative space, stand out more.

GIF final draft

this is my final draft of the gif project

questions
how did you use movement in the piece?

i used bright colours throughout the GIF. the frames are short and choppy, and flashes an inverted background and doge. the movement of the mask that reveals the first set of text, is the only part of the GIF that is slow and smooth. next, the text flashes and multiplies to cover the screen. this makes the overall mood loud, bright, and jumpy.

Textures in Photoshop

inverted coffee swirled with galaxy

1. Which filter, layer blend, or adjustment layer effect was the most important to the success of your image?
the invert tool was most important because the coffee was inverted in certain parts, and erased in others. there is then another layer of the coffee not inverted underneath it that shows the tan/orange color of the coffee. the inverted coffee becomes blue and purple, which blends easily into the galaxy background using the layer blend tool.

2. What object is the EMPHASIS in your work? How did you make it stand out?
the latte art is the focus of this because it contrasts the warm coloured coffee with its dark blue design. the table is a circle, so it leads you to the other round shapes inside, like the coffee cups. the wispy lines on the marble table lead you diagonally and across both cups. also, the feet and legs are pointing at the table.
