Textures in Photoshop

inverted coffee swirled with galaxy

1. Which filter, layer blend, or adjustment layer effect was the most important to the success of your image?
the invert tool was most important because the coffee was inverted in certain parts, and erased in others. there is then another layer of the coffee not inverted underneath it that shows the tan/orange color of the coffee. the inverted coffee becomes blue and purple, which blends easily into the galaxy background using the layer blend tool.

2. What object is the EMPHASIS in your work? How did you make it stand out?
the latte art is the focus of this because it contrasts the warm coloured coffee with its dark blue design. the table is a circle, so it leads you to the other round shapes inside, like the coffee cups. the wispy lines on the marble table lead you diagonally and across both cups. also, the feet and legs are pointing at the table.

questions

What are the areas of EMPHASIS? How did you use the elements of art to make them stand out? Elements are: color, value, shape, size, texture, line.... or other visual effects?
The emphasis of this piece is the word "deleterious". it stands out because it is white text on the black background. it is also bold and in all capital letters.
How did you use elements to lead our attention around the bag?
the fire that spreads throughout the bag is an example of movement. also, the caution tape wraps around all sides, and goes over and under the flames as well. the folding and cutting pattern is outlined further, instead of trying to hide it.
What software techniques or design ideas made your work unique?
i created my own caution tape instead of using an image and tracing it. i also used the layers feature a lot during this project to separate the outlines, flames, caution tape, and background.
How does your design relate to and describe the word you were given?
the word deleterious means dangerous, or harmful. i conveyed this with police tape, fire, and bold letters and contrast. the flames engulf the bottom of the bag, which implies that it is growing and spreading. the colour scheme is warm toned and bold, like fire, rather than cool and calm colors like blue.

Kerry James Marshall

"a shadow of my former self"

this piece is by Kerry James Marshall, an african-american man from Chicago. this is entitled "a shadow of my former self" because most of the painting is flat, and the same color: black. the silhouette is flat black, and blends in with the hat and jacket. nearly all facial features are hidden in the shadows, but the mouth is bright white and missing a tooth. this is a reference to his childhood, and a representation of being broken in a way. the collar is sharp and contrasts against the dark jacket. it is very close to his neck, which indicates a degree of danger, likely stemming from his history and roots in Alabama and Chicago.

goya's macabre artwork

unos a otros (what one does to the other)
-this painting shows skeleton-like entities holding one of them in the air. this skeleton is the only one wearing a wig, and is much higher up than the rest of them.

carretadas al cementerio (cartloads for the cemetery)
-this painting depicts bodies being carted to be buried. this was part of a collection of paintings surrounding famine.

y no hay remedio (and it cannot be helped)
-this painting is of a man bound to a pole blindfolded, likely about to be executed. this is implied by the dead bodies surrounding him on the ground, and also the uniformed men in the background with weapons, killing the others that are bound and blindfolded.

sparrow club designs

Sparrow Club T-Shirt Designs

These are the five designs that we made in class. I decided that I liked the second design best.

These were done on trace paper. The bird with wings out will be flipped on the vertical axis to create a mirror image. The winged birds will be on either side of the other bird, perched on the branch. The circle is the border, and the lines outside the circle are where the text will go.

colour scheme

I chose an analogous color scheme because i want my piece to be calm and mellow, rather than clashing and contrasting. I picked blue-green, blue, and violet because i want my project to be overall cool toned.

Photos with Line

Emphasis
in this photo, the eye is immediately drawn to the silver star on the cover of the notebook, because it is a bright and shiny shape on an all black space.
Movement
the orange dividers between the pages, and the papers themselves show line and flow from the left side to the right, with the metal spiral. the spiral then leads the eye up the right side toward the geometric shapes above the notebook.
Variety
as you can see, there are folds and imperfections in the pages and dividers. the edges of the paper being slightly askew and misaligned adds variety to the photo.

Emphasis
the emphasis of this photo is definitely the large triangle in the center. the intersecting silver line points toward the middle of it, directing your vision to the focal point.
Movement
the two parallel lines bring your eyes to the small triangle, then to the larger one in the center.
Variety
the lines of the notebook paper serve as a background that directly relates to the drawn lines. there are black lines and also silver, and the contrast between them adds variety.

Emphasis
the focal point of this photo is the small notch in the wood toward the top. it draws your attention because it is the lightest part. it also is right on the border of were the wood is lighter, and where it is darker on the right side.
Movement
the grain of the wood flows vertically and curves to the right slightly. when you see the chip at the top, your eyes go to the screw, then the scuff toward the bottom, and then to the contrast between the light and dark parts of wood.
Variety
the different tints to the wood, it works like a background behind the lines of the grain. there is a dark spot on the right, and the screw, scuff, and chip on the light side of the wood balance the left and right sides.
